It is roughly the inverse. CAC payback in months is about 12 / (magic number x gross margin). A magic number of 0.8 at 80% gross margin implies a payback of roughly 18.8 months. A higher magic number means a shorter payback.

Why can a good magic number be misleading?

Because it only looks at top-line ARR growth against spend. It is a lagging indicator, it does not separate new revenue from expansion or see churn, and a strong number can sit on top of a leaky bucket. Always read it next to net revenue retention and CAC payback.

How do I improve my magic number?

Fix churn and tighten your ICP before spending more, segment the number by channel and customer type to invest where it is strong, and lower CAC. Cutting the cost to acquire each customer lifts the number without adding a dollar of spend.
