If you have even a small following on X, launch there and treat Product Hunt as the second stage on the same day. If you have no audience anywhere, Product Hunt is the one place a stranger might find you, but only if the team features you.
Most software startups fit the first or third rule. So our default is both, same day, X first.
| Product Hunt | X | |
|---|---|---|
| When it starts | A fixed day. Product Hunt suggests 12:01 a.m. Pacific | Whenever your audience is awake |
| Who sees it | Featured launches show on the homepage by default; the rest sit under All | Your followers, then whoever their replies and reposts reach |
| What moves it | Upvotes, comments, time since posting and factors Product Hunt doesn't publish | Replies and conversation far more than likes |
| What you can ask for | Comments and feedback. Asking for upvotes is against the rules | Anything, but a question gets replies |
| Where the video goes | In the gallery | Uploaded to the post, not linked |
| How long it lasts | One day on the leaderboard, then a permanent page | As long as you keep adding to the thread |
The Product Hunt column comes from its own launch guide: the 12:01 a.m. Pacific advice and the ban on asking for upvotes (Product Hunt launch guide), and the featured-by-default homepage and the ranking factors (how Product Hunt works). The X column comes from the ranking weights X published in 2023, where a reply counted 13.5 and a like 0.5 (the-algorithm-ml).

Schedule the Product Hunt launch ahead of time. Product Hunt lets you schedule up to a month out (Product Hunt), so it can go live at 12:01 a.m. without anyone awake. Write the maker's first comment the night before: what it is, who it's for, and what feedback you want. Product Hunt says 70% of products that won Product of the Day, Week or Month had a first comment from the maker.
Post on X when your followers wake up, not at midnight. The launch post follows the same rules as any launch on X: what the product does in line one, the video uploaded natively, a question at the end, the link in the first reply. Our guide on how to write a launch tweet covers that post line by line.
Then check the Product Hunt homepage around 7 a.m. That one check decides what your X post links to. If you're featured, add a second reply on X: "We're also on Product Hunt today, come tell us what you think" with the link. That's asking for comments, which Product Hunt allows. If you're not featured, leave Product Hunt out of the X post. Your followers can reach the page, but sending them to a launch that isn't on the homepage spends their attention on something strangers won't see.
One 30 to 60 second product video covers both. On X it goes in the launch post, cut to fit the feed and captioned for sound-off viewing (specs in our X launch video guide). On Product Hunt it goes in the gallery. Product Hunt says about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 had a video, so it's common but not required.
The mistake is making two videos, or none. A launch video that starts with the product working, not the founder talking, works on both platforms. That's the kind of video Flowjam makes: one master cut plus an X version, ready before launch morning. See how our launch videos work.
Two cases. You have no audience on X and no time to build one before launch, so the X post would be talking to nobody. Or your product is a developer or design tool, where people browse Product Hunt specifically to find tools like yours and the badge helps on the landing page for months.
Even then, post the launch on X. It costs ten minutes, it gives the people who do know you something to repost, and the thread becomes the place to post results in the week after. For the Product Hunt side in depth, see our guide to getting featured on Product Hunt. For everything else on the X side, from the thread to the first hour of replies, see the full guide to launching on X.

If you have any audience on X, launch there and use Product Hunt as the second stage on the same day. If you have no following anywhere, Product Hunt gives you a chance at strangers, but only if your launch is featured on the homepage.
Yes, for most startups. Schedule Product Hunt for 12:01 a.m. Pacific, then post on X when your followers wake up. Keeping both on one day means one burst of attention instead of two weak ones.
No. Product Hunt's rules say not to ask for upvotes. Ask people to visit and comment or share feedback instead, and only send them there if your launch is featured.
When your followers are awake, usually morning in their main time zone. There's no reason to post at midnight because X doesn't reset at a fixed time the way Product Hunt's daily leaderboard does.
It isn't required. Product Hunt says about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 had one. You'll want one on X anyway, so make one video and use it in both places.
Point your X post at your own site rather than the Product Hunt page, keep answering comments on Product Hunt, and treat X as the main launch for the rest of the day.
