The Boost button under your launch post is the easiest money you'll ever spend on X, and on launch morning it's usually the wrong move. Paying to promote a post on X amplifies whatever the post already is. If nobody is replying in the first hour, a budget buys more people who don't reply.
Our rule: post organically, wait an hour, then decide. If real people are replying, pay to widen the audience through Ads Manager, where you can pause. Use Boost only if you've read what you're agreeing to.

| Boost (from the post) | Ads Manager campaign | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | The Boost or Promote button under your own post | ads.x.com, after adding a payment method |
| Minimum spend | Set by the amount options X shows you | None, per X's ads pricing page |
| Can you pause or cancel? | Noonce purchased | Yesyou control budget and dates |
| What you pay for | A fixed amount for extra reach | Depends on the objective: impressions, video views, link clicks or engagements |
| Best for | A post that is already working, when you accept the terms | A launch you want to steer: views of the video or visits to the page |
The Boost line comes from X's Boosted Program terms: payments "are final and not refundable," the post "will be boosted immediately upon purchase," and a boost "may not be canceled or paused after it is purchased." X rolled it out to Premium subscribers on iOS first in 2025 (Social Media Today), and where you see it now depends on your account and country. The Ads Manager line comes from X's ads pricing page: "There is no minimum spend required for X Ads."
If you'll only spend once, on one post, on the day, and the post is clearly working, Boost is fine. Read the total before you confirm, because the screen can default to a daily amount over several days. In every other case, use Ads Manager.
X runs ads in an auction, and the price you pay depends partly on "how engaging your ad is" (X ads pricing). A post that isn't getting organic replies is telling you it'll be expensive to promote as well.
So the first hour is free research. Count replies from strangers, not likes from your team. Replies were the signal X's own ranking weighted most in the version it published in 2023 (the-algorithm-ml), and they're what makes a promoted post look alive to the people seeing it for the first time. A promoted post with two replies looks like an ad. One with forty looks like a launch.
If the hour is quiet, the problem is usually line one, the video or the first reply, not distribution. Our launch tweet guide covers the copy. If it's the video, you need one that makes sense on mute in the first ten seconds, which is exactly what Flowjam's launch videos are built for. Fix the post, and post a better version the next day instead of paying to push the weak one.
In Ads Manager, the objective decides what you pay for. X's Campaigns 101 lists them: Reach bills per 1,000 impressions, Video views by impressions or views, Website traffic by impressions or link clicks, Engagements per engagement. For a launch, two matter.
Start narrow: an audience of people who follow accounts your customers follow, or keywords they use, in the countries you can sell to. A small budget spread across everyone on X buys nothing you can learn from.
"Why can't I promote a post on X" is one of the most common searches around this. X's promoted ads troubleshooting page lists the usual causes. The last item on this list comes from X's help for its earlier Quick Promote tool.
Promotion puts the post in front of people who have never heard of you, scrolling with the sound off. That changes what the post needs.
The video has to explain the product on mute: captions, the product on screen in the first seconds, no logo intro. Cut a separate promoted version: X's own guidance for promoted video is 15 seconds or less, with captions or text overlays strongly recommended (X ad specs). Its video views definition means the first 10 seconds decide whether you're paying for a view or for nothing. Line one of the post has to say what the product is, because the promoted audience has no context. And the link belongs in the post for a Website traffic campaign even if, organically, you'd put it in the first reply.
This is where most launch budgets leak: a video made for followers who already know the product, promoted to strangers who don't. You pay for the impression either way; only one of those videos turns it into a view. Flowjam makes launch videos built for that first cold view, captioned and cut to the length X's feed rewards. Get your launch video made before you spend a dollar on promotion, and check our X launch video specs.

Either tap Boost or Promote under your own post, if your account has it, and pick an amount, or open X Ads Manager, add a payment method and create a campaign that uses the existing post as the ad.
There's no fixed price. X Ads Manager has no minimum spend and prices by auction, so cost depends on your audience, bid and how engaging the post is. Boost shows you amount options before you pay; check the daily amount and number of days.
No. X's Boosted Program terms say a boost can't be cancelled or paused after purchase and payments aren't refundable, except where the law requires. Ads Manager campaigns can be paused.
Common causes are no payment method on the ads account, a post that doesn't fit the objective (no video in a video views campaign), a link over 255 characters, missing permissions on a shared ads account, or a repost, quote post or protected account.
Only after it gets real replies in the first hour. Promotion amplifies the post you have, and X prices its ad auction partly on how engaging the ad is.
Video views if you want people to watch the launch video, Website traffic if you want sign-ups. Engagements mostly adds likes to the post.
