X Launch Checklist: What Founders Miss the Night Before

An X launch checklist for founders: what to finish the night before, how to post, what to do in the first hour, and what to skip on launch day.

Most X launches are lost the night before. The video is 3 minutes long and won't upload on a free account, the link is in the post itself, the landing page breaks on a phone, and nobody who would reply knows it's happening.

Here is the list we'd run, built from the questions founders actually ask before launching on X. The short version is the image below. The rest is the reasoning, because a checklist you don't understand gets skipped.

X launch checklist in four columns: night before, posting, first hour, next day
The whole checklist on one screen. Save it, tick it off.

What has to be finished the night before?

Six things, and each one is a common way to lose launch day.

The video file. Upload it natively as an MP4. On a free account X takes video up to 2 minutes 20 seconds and 512MB (X video help), so a 3-minute cut either needs Premium or, better, an edit. Burn the captions in; most people in the feed watch muted. Specs and length are in our X launch video guide.

The post text. The product name and what it does go in line one, because that line is all most people read. If you're stuck, our launch tweet guide has the rules.

The first reply, written and saved, with the link in it. The landing page, opened on your own phone, on mobile data, not office wifi. Your bio, rewritten to one line about the product plus the link. And 10 to 20 people who would genuinely have something to say, told by DM that it goes out tomorrow.

Founder account or company account?

Founder. The company account has fewer followers who care, and replies to a logo feel like talking to a help desk. The company account quotes the founder's post with its own line instead of posting a second copy of the announcement. Two accounts posting the same launch splits the replies in half.

In the first reply, under the video. In November 2024 Elon Musk said X deprioritises posts that contain links (Business Today). X's stance has moved around since, so treat it as a risk, not a rule. But the cost of the workaround is one tap, and the post with the video is the one you want shown to strangers. Put "link below" at the end of the post so nobody has to hunt.

What time should the launch post go out?

When you can sit there for the next two hours, in a slot when your customers are awake. That's the whole rule. Nobody has a universal best time on X that survives contact with your own audience, and a perfect slot you can't babysit is worse than an average one you can.

If your users are mostly in the US, a weekday morning Eastern time covers both coasts. If you're launching on Product Hunt the same day, the timing question gets harder; our Product Hunt vs X post covers how to sequence the two. And if you haven't posted much on X before, start weeks ahead; building in public is how the launch post gets an audience.

Can I schedule it?

You can. X documents scheduling through the Ads composer at ads.x.com (X scheduled posts). We wouldn't for a launch. Scheduling assumes the post runs itself, and a launch post doesn't. If you're going to be at the keyboard anyway, press the button yourself.

What do I actually do in the first hour?

Answer replies. Every real one, quickly, with something more than "thanks!". Ask a question back when you can, because it starts a conversation instead of ending one.

This is the part with numbers behind it. In the ranking code X published in 2023, a reply was weighted 13.5, a like 0.5, and a reply that the post's author then engaged with 75 (the-algorithm-ml). Weights change, but the direction is clear: a conversation you take part in counts for far more than applause.

If someone reports a bug, fix it if you can and say so in the reply. That's the best demo you'll get all day.

Should I ask friends to like and repost?

Tell them it's happening. Don't organise a likes trade. X's authenticity policy bans "coordinating to exchange engagement" in likes, replies and reposts, and bans posting and deleting the same content repeatedly (X authenticity policy). A ring of founders liking each other's launches is exactly that.

The DM that works is different: "we launch tomorrow at 9am ET, I'd love your honest take on the demo." That gets you replies with substance, from people who'd say something anyway.

What if it flops?

Don't delete it and post it again. That's on the list of things X's policy calls spam, and it throws away whatever replies you did get.

Instead, keep it pinned and add to it. X lets you extend a thread after posting with "Add another post" (X thread help), so the next day you can reply to your own launch with a second clip, a customer question you answered, or the thing you shipped overnight. Our launch thread template has a structure for it.

Only put money behind it if strangers are already replying. Paying to push a post nobody engages with buys expensive impressions. How to do it, and which X ad option to pick, is in our guide to promoting a launch post on X.

Do I need X Premium to launch?

No. If your video is under 2:20 and your post fits in 280 characters, a free account does everything on this list. Premium allows longer posts and much longer video (X Premium), and neither helps a launch. If you need more than 2:20 to show the product, the video is the problem.

Which brings it back to the one item on the list you can't fix on the day. Everything else is a setting, a draft or a DM. The video takes weeks, and it's what strangers decide on in the first three seconds. That's the part Flowjam does: story-driven launch videos for AI and SaaS founders, cut for X. Ours have averaged over 100,000 views each with no media budget and no boosting (our launch work).

Frequently asked questions

What should be on an X launch checklist?

A native MP4 video under 2:20 with captions, post text with the product in line one, a first reply with the link, a landing page tested on a phone, a one-line bio with the link, and 10 to 20 people told by DM. On the day: post from the founder account, pin the post and answer every real reply in the first hour.

Should I launch on X and Product Hunt the same day?

You can, but each one wants your full attention for the first hours. Product Hunt's day resets at 12:01am Pacific, so a common split is Product Hunt overnight and the X post in the US morning, with the Product Hunt link in a reply. Our Product Hunt vs X post covers the trade-offs.

How long before launch should I start posting on X?

Weeks, not days. The launch post is shown first to people who already follow you, so a few weeks of posting about what you're building gives it an audience that replies. Our build in public guide covers what to post.

Is it against X's rules to ask people to like my launch?

Telling people about your launch is fine. Coordinating to exchange likes, replies or reposts is banned under X's authenticity policy, as is repeatedly deleting and reposting the same content.

Do I need X Premium to launch a product on X?

No. A free account can post video up to 2 minutes 20 seconds and 512MB, which is longer than a launch video should be.
